Social Networks?

So I finally joined a social network online. My sister has been telling me to for years and I just never really got on that bandwagon. But a couple days ago I joined Facebook.

On the one hand, I'm really excited to get back in contact with some of my friends from High School and College. On the other hand, I can see how this could be a huge time sucker. It is so addicting! There are so many things to do and say and people to find. It's really fun, but it's almost scary how someone can spend an entire day online, not seeing anyone face to face, and still feel like they're part of society. I don't know how I feel about this. I guess it was inevitable with the way technology is starting to rule our lives and it is better than some alternatives.

I like Facebook and I have fun talking to my friends, seeing photos of what they've been doing, and staying touch with them all. Just makes me wonder, ya know?

Are you a member of a social network? Your thoughts?

I joined Myspace awhile ago, after a long time of trying to avoid it. I like it better than I thought I would; it's nice to look up my old friends and see what they're doing now (that can get kind of depressing, though). But I don't spend that much time on it.

I don't really think online socializing is worse than other kinds - when it comes down to it, what makes an IM conversation less social than, say, a phone call? I suppose it would be bad if people started relying on the internet for all their social contact; I don't have any experience with that, though. I'm not a very social person (actually, that's kind of an understatement), so online socializing doesn't take away from other forms of socializing for me, it actually makes me more social.
